Our History

The story begins way back in 1899 – two years before the death of Queen Victoria.

GW Dawes vehicles 1800'sGeorge William Dawes decided to start his own business from modest beginnings in a small office in Holme Lane, Sheffield which had a house attached. The business expanded with the house being converted in to more offices and soon the name of Dawes was a by word in Sheffield.

Moving forward in time its workforce grew and with it the area it covered to include most of the UK. It even opened an office in North Cheam which was there for twenty years until John William Dawes, son of the founder, decided to focus the Company energies in and around Sheffield.

By the late 1950s, there had been three generations of the Dawes Family running and working within the Company. Keen to be at the forefront of its industry it sported a fleet of vehicles with radios to keep in constant communication with the office. Land lines connected a transmitter to a remote control unit at the head office. This was also supported by a mobile workshop complete with an area to work on site drawings, which could be up dated later on the office printer and Photostat machines.

Now in the 21st century these innovations have been replaced with Facsimile, Email, Photo copiers, scanners, computers, autocad design, computerized estimation packages, mobile telephones, cameras and digital technology. The fleet of vehicles still proudly sports its original Dawes Logo along with its later accreditations for Constructionline, CHAS and North West Consortium. The original Dawes Family has, after two further Managing Directors and their influence, now been replaced by Mr. Michael Thew.

GW Dawes vehicles 2000'sMike took over in 2011 after being within the construction Industry since leaving school. In the last eight years prior to his purchase of the Company he worked with Dawes as a Contracts Director and has been instrumental in bringing the Company to its present status. With his own son working within the business as a trained Plumber and Gas engineer he is carrying on the traditional family values of excellent customer service and a united, long serving work force.
