Our History
Our story began just before the turn of the 20th century in 1899, when George William Dawes founded a small plumbing and mechanical services business from a modest office and adjoining home on Holme Lane, Sheffield. As demand grew, so did our reputation — and the Dawes name quickly became known across the city for quality workmanship and trusted service.
Over the decades, we expanded nationwide, opening a second office in North Cheam before returning our focus to Sheffield and the surrounding region under the leadership of John William Dawes, George’s son.
By the 1950s, three generations of the Dawes family were driving the business forward, with innovation at the heart of everything we did — from being among the first to install radios in our fleet for real-time communication, to pioneering mobile workshops and on-site drawing updates.
Today, the tools may have changed — AutoCAD, digital estimation, and mobile technology now shape how we work — but our core values remain the same: quality, reliability, and a strong commitment to customer service.
Since 2011, G.W. Dawes Ltd has been led by Managing Director Michael Thew, a seasoned professional in mechanical and building services. Under his leadership, the business continues to grow while staying true to its roots — proudly local, family-oriented, and built to last.
